The Schuhplattler is a typical dance from Bavaria and Tyrol. Its name means “shoe striker” because it literally consists of beating the soles of the shoes and legs with the hands. In Folk-s this dance is conceived and performed as a reference to a pre-existing, primitive way of thinking: dance as a rule, a dictatorship, a flow of images that follow the rhythm and form but not the content. For the performers in Folk-s, therefore, there is no time except the present, a time that is neither past nor future.

The artist, choreographer and director Alessandro Sciarroni comes from the world of the visual arts and has many years of experience in theatre. His shows have been staged at contemporary theatre and dance festivals in twenty countries. In 2013 he became the first Italian artist to receive the support of the European modul-dance network.

In 2012 Sciarroni won the prize for the best new artist awarded by the Italian magazine Danza&Danza. In May 2013 Folk-s opened the Rencontres chorégraphiques internationales in Seine-Saint-Denis. His latest work, Untitled_I Will Be There When You Die, is a meditation, through choreography and performance, on the passing of time. He is currently involved in Performing Gender, a European dance project that explores gender differences and sexual orientation, and throughout 2014 he will take part in Migrant Body, a dance project aimed at generating public and artistic reflection on migration and the cultural impact this has on European and Canadian society.
