The duet It Needs Horses by Lost Dog, winner of The Place Prize, arrives at the Mercat together with the company’s latest work, Home for Broken Turns: a very physical theatre-dance piece full of black humour, performed by a international cast of artists from renowned European dance and physical theatre companies such as the Hofesh Shechter Company, Fabulous Beast and Gecko.

It Needs Horses tells the story of an unexceptional circus duo and their increasingly desperate attempts to entertain the audience. The glamour has gone, the performers have forgotten the numbers, but the show must go on. Home for Broken Turns follows the protagonists of this disastrous double number after they leave the circus tent for the last time. The piece, inspired by Pirandello’s work Six Characters in Search of an Author, looks at how fictional characters continue to exist even when the work that gave them life has finished. The Home for Broken Turns is the place where the characters meet up, under the eye of a formidable matriarch who is both protector and procuress for these lost theatre children.

Lost Dog was formed in 2004 and has won numerous awards. These include first prize at the Burgos International Choreography Competition and second prize at the prestigious Hannover Choreography Competition. Furthermore, the Phoenix Dance Theatre bought and toured their first work. Their second work, The Drowner, was nominated for a Total Theatre award and drew enthusiastic responses from the critics at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In November 2005 the company won the award for new choreography handed out by the Bonnie Bird Foundation (UK). Lost Dog has created three long pieces and several short ones.
