THE SHOW

In Érection, a man lying on the ground tells the long story of his move from a crouched to an upright position. One man only, stretched out inside an electric green rectangle where space and time go undefined. A heart that grows, a body that searches. A lifting mechanism, standing up, moving forward to snatches of sound. Using his head, pelvis and feet. Like a man suspended above the ground who dreams of being able to walk in the air. Between dead ends and decisions, he tries, he gets it wrong, falls, tries again, gradually extending the boundaries of the species. Sometimes like an upturned jellyfish with fragile tentacles, sometimes like a crocodile moving silently forward, this strange creature slowly rises on new feet, a wingless Icarus, a kind of cyborg who discovers his double…

THE ARTISTS

Pierre Rigal, after initial training as an athlete, went on to study Mathematics and Economics in Barcelonaand took a master’s in cinema. Contact with choreographers such as Heddy Maalem, Bernardo Montet and Wim Vandekeybus, and with directors such as Mladen Materic, prompted him to plunge into the world of contemporary dance. In 2002 he joined choreographer Gilles Jobin’s dance company and in 2003 founded the Compagnie Dernière Minute, choreographing and producing his first work, the solo piece Érection, directed by Aurélien Bory. The 2011 Grec Festival presented a retrospective of his shows.

Aurélien Bory studied Physics at Strasbourgand then focussed his career on the field of architectural acoustics. Nonetheless, in 1995 he joined the creative studio Le Lido – Centre municipal des arts du cirque. In 2000 he founded the Compagnie 111 and in 2003 he directed Pierre Rigal in his first solo, Érection, the origin of a close uninterrupted partnership that still continues today. In 2008 he received the Radio France trophy «Creator without frontiers» for his international body of work. His approach with its blending of genres revolves around the theme of space, which is explored through an unmistakable set design.
