Through both its choreography and concept, Tradere delves into what tradition means from a modern-day perspective. While Santanach’s previous work, ÀER, revisited the Catalan contrapàs dances through the lens of gender, Tradere takes this interest in tradition a step further by widening it scope. It analyses the different Western traditions that involve the body and push it to the limit, putting it at risk in order to keep these societies’ deep-rooted, identifying customs alive.
Laia Santanach is a choreographer, dancer and pedagogue who self-directs her projects under her own name. She has created several pieces since 2016. She has also collaborated with artists such as Roser Tutusaus and Miquel Barcelona and has presented audiovisual video-dance creations such as 1714 and Now. As a dancer she has worked with companies such as Trànsit Dansa, Gelabert-Azzopardi, Vero Cendoya and Teresa Nieto, among others, and with stage directors such as Àlex Rigola, Carme Portacelli, La Fura dels Baus and Comediants, to name a few. She currently teaches on the Unversitat Autònoma de Barcelona’s Dance Activities programme.
