AT CASTELL DE MONTJUÏC
For the first time in Catalonia, Aina Alegre presents her participatory work PARADES & DÉSOBÉISSANCES at Montjuïc Castle in Barcelona. Drawing on ritual gestures developed through her artistic research, she creates a monumental dance piece, rooted in rhythm and performed by around one hundred amateur dancers. The crowd becomes a temporary community and a living architecture, its movements resonating with the site and giving it a new, embodied and festive memory. The powerful gestural and sonic qualities of the piece, and the dialogue between bodies, space and architecture, are at the heart of Aina Alegre’s approach to this project: “What interests me is creating a collective body while making room for all forms of diversity, bringing the work into dialogue with public space, and giving heritage sites a new energy through a collective dance that is powerful and exhilarating.”
Aina Alegre has been co-director of the National Choreographic Centre in Grenoble since 2023. She sees choreography as a way of opening up imaginary worlds around the body. Through dance she explores different relationships involving the collective body. She conceives her shows as an “orchestration” of movement, sound, light and space. In her creations she also investigates the ideas of memory and archive, which run through all her work. Aina Alegre has been an associate artist at the Mercat, which has staged several of her pieces in recent seasons.
