After attending a brief performance by a group of men dancing a folk dance in Istanbul, Rizzo felt deeply moved. He wonders: “What was it that affected me? The dance itself or the emptiness they left behind with their disappearance? The feeling has been with me ever since.”
In D’après une histoire vraie the choreographer evokes the emotions he experienced and with eight dancers and two drum kits transfers them to the stage, imagining a dance arising from his folkloric roots (specifically male and Mediterranean) in search of a collective presentation free of any signs of identity, not belonging to any particular group or region. The music played on the two drum kits ranges from tribal rhythms to the sounds of psychedelic rock.
Christian Rizzo founded L’association fragile in 1996 and stages performances, objects that dance and choreographic works, which he alternates with other projects and commissions in the fields of fashion and the plastic arts. Since then he has produced over thirty shows. Rizzo also teaches on a regular basis at art schools in France and other countries as well as at institutions dedicated to contemporary dance.
In 2013 he created D’après une histoire vraie for the Avignon Festival, which met with great success, and De quoi tenir jusqu’à l’ombre, a work for the company L’Oiseau-mouche (Roubaix). In November 2013 he directed Aïloviou, je l’écris comme je le prononce, by Didier Galas, for the company Ensemble Lidonnes (a creation for the 2013 Mettre en Scène festival in Rennes). Christian Rizzo won the SACD (Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers of France) choreography award in 2013. And in 2014, together with Caty Olive, he specially created the live installation Ou pas for the National Ballet of Marseille.
