The Maria Aurèlia Capmany is the main theatre of the Mercat de les Flors. Its versatility with regard to assembly allows it to accommodate very diverse productions. At its maximum capacity, it has 436 seats.
It is named after the councilwoman who decided to turn the Mercat de les Flors into a theater. Multifaceted woman of culture, Maria Aurèlia Capmany (Barcelona, 1918-1991) stood out as a novelist, essayist interested in culture and feminism, translator and screenwriter of comics, radio and television. In 1959 he founded, together with theater director Ricard Salvat, the Escola d’Art Dramàtic Adrià Gual, where he premiered his own works such as Preguntes i respostes sobre la vida i la mort of Francesc Layret, Advocat dels obrers de Catalunya or L’ombra de l’escorpí. In the field of politics, she was a member of the Partit dels Socialistes de Catalunya, Councilor for Culture at the Barcelona City Council and a member of the Barcelona Provincial Council.
