ROGER BERNAT

Based on the The Rite of Spring, the music that Stravinsky wrote for Nijinsky’s ballet in 1913, Pina Bausch choreographed this piece in 1975 for the Tanztheater Wuppertal. The Rite of Spring is one of the iconic works of dance-theatre and in 2010 Roger Bernat staged a radical version without professional dancers in which the audience assumes the performing role. Their gestures develop a ritual that reconstructs the logic of sacrifice and confronts the audience with the pleasure of disappearance, the darkness of loneliness and the driving force of survival.

Roger Bernat designs choreographies where the audience gives shape to the work. His shows have been performed in over 30 countries and he has won many awards, including the 2017 FAD Sebastià Gasch Prize. His most recent shows are Desnonissea (ASM, 2021), Pim Pam (34th Sao Paulo Biennial, 2021), Terra Baixa (Teatre Lliure, 2022), Dormifestació (Fira Tàrrega, 2022) and La Scelta (Sansepolcro, Italy, 2023).
