We’re collaborating once again with Aina Alegre, who was an artist-in-residence at Mercat de les Flors from 2021 to 2023 and whose work we’ve had the pleasure of showcasing on several occasions. She now returns with FUGACES, her own interpretation of the iconic Carmen Amaya, an artist whose energy and story she has long admired. Aina recalls being deeply moved the first time she saw Carmen dance: “She made me realise that dance could be a vital force, a space for struggle and survival.” This piece proposes a friction between artistic languages, with choreographic writing rooted in both textual and audiovisual archives. Aina revisits her fascination with striking bodies that find rhythm and generate a kind of internal music through their dance.
A choreographer and dancer, Aina Alegre has been creating performances and stage works in a variety of formats since 2010. She approaches choreography as a means of opening up imaginary worlds through the body. Her work explores different relationships with the collective body, and she conceives her choreographic process as an “orchestration” of movement, sound, light and space. Her writing is both choreographic and musical; in recent years, she has developed a distinctive musical style, choreographing and composing music for the eyes. Through her creations, she also investigates the notions of memory and archive – themes that run throughout her work. Since 2023, she has co-directed the Centre chorégraphique national de Grenoble alongside dancer Yannick Hugron.
