LAIA SANTANACH

The third part of Laia Santanach’s trilogy on traditional collective dances, Jarana, uses contemporary dance as a vehicle for communication, in dialogue with live electronic music and in relation to the space inhabited. Jarana investigates traditional practices that are either disappearing or in danger of doing so, and invites reflection on the importance of preserving traditional celebrations while at the same time exploring new forms of collective expression in an increasingly changing and technological world.

Laia Santanach is a choreographer, dancer and teacher. She runs her own dance company. In 2016, she created the solo Ballant ballàvem, which won the Best Performer Award at the 15m2 festival in 2023. Since 2017, she has been interested in working with live electronic music and thus created Réplica, finalist at the IT Awards, while since 2018, she has been investigating tradition and collective practices, with pieces such as ÀER (2019), which received the Delfí Colomé Award and was a finalist for the Max Awards for best choreography. In 2022, her show Tradere premièred at the Mercat de les Flors. She has co-directed the festival Menorca en Dansa since she co-created it in 2016. She currently teaches at the Aula de Dansa at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
