Philippe Saire’s new creation revolves around our fascination with the huge bunches of balloons sold by street sellers. The balloons, which dance in the wind, acquire a kind of disturbing independence and torment the body to which they are attached, which below the cluster seems almost fragile. Cheerful and brightly coloured, often decorated with Disney characters, they look strangely menacing, as if they were turning the world of entertainment upside down and turning it against us.
Philippe Saire, one of the leading figures in contemporary Swiss dance, has created some thirty shows, as well as site-specific performances, short films and workshops. His choreographic work, often intense and carefully crafted, integrates the visual arts, theatre and film. Since its inception in 1986, the company has performed more than 1,400 shows in more than two hundred cities around the world. In 1995, Philippe Saire inaugurated Théâtre Sévelin 36, his work space in Lausanne, dedicated exclusively to contemporary dance.
