In Felahikum (the Arabic term thought to be the root of the word ‘flamenco’), Sébastien Ramirez presents a work of deep research carried out with the dancers Rocio Molina (flamenco, from Seville) and Honjo Wang (hip-hop and classical ballet, from Berlin), where he confronts different styles of dance. This choreographic exchange seeks a possible dialogue between these dance cultures and aims to examine the status of women in society, among other aspects of the social dimension of flamenco and hip-hop.

Sébastien Ramirez began as a b-boy in 1996 and had already become a professional dancer and choreographer by 2000. Inspired by hip-hop culture since his childhood, he first focused his attention on b-boying. Then, through the development of several movements of his own, he built up a personal approach to technique and explored different areas of dance before finally creating his own “soft and controlled” style.

Honji Wang studied classical ballet for ten years at the Frankfurt conservatory before coming into contact with the techniques of hip-hop and b-girling, House and Newstyle. In 2010 she began working professionally with Ramirez, and together they created the duet AP15, and a year later Monchichi, a dance-theatre production. Both shows have won awards at various competitions and toured with great success around the world, with performances at venues such as the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and Sadler’s Wells in London. They subsequently presented Borderline (2012-2013).

This meeting between Wang Honjo and Rocío Molina, directed by Sébastien Ramirez, poses the question of what choreographic language can result from the coming together of these two women and their specific attitudes, postures and aesthetics. Now at the pinnacle of her career Rocio Molina provides the counterpoint of flamenco art, displaying a mastery confirmed by her undeniable artistic status. Her dancing, with its need to explore and its provocativeness, places her beyond any established conventions.
