Works in Silence show a decisive phase in one of the leading choreographers of the 20th century. This collection of Childs’ early works offers particular interest both for their rarity and for their importance in the dance world. Most of these pieces have not been seen since they were shown for the first time in the 1970s. In these works, Childs leaves behind props, objects, the spoken word, symbolic movement – all the hallmarks of her period at the Judson Dance Theatre – and has chosen to focus on the essence of the first movement which, for Childs, is the act of walking. From walking to running, to changing direction, to jumping: Works in Silence illustrate the evolution from movement to dance through Lucinda Childs’ choreographic vision.

Dance On Ensemble is a company founded in 2015 by the Berlin-based non-profit organization Diehl+Ritter as part of the Dance On initiative, which celebrates the artistic excellence of dancers over 40 and explores the relationship between dance and age, both on the stage and in society. It works with internationally renowned choreographers such as Lucinda Childs, the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, the Martha Graham Dance Company, the Netherlands Dance Theater, the Hamburg Ballet and Cullberg Balletten, among others.

Born in New York, Lucinda Childs started her career at the Judson Dance Theatre in 1963. In 1973, she formed her own company, with which she has created over 50 works. Since 1981, she has choreographed more than 30 works for major companies, such as the Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Berlin State Ballet or Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Company, and for theatres such as the Los Angeles Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein or La Monnaie in Brussels. Her choreographies are known for their minimalist movements and complex transitions, transforming the slightest movements into intricate choreographic masterpieces.
