Panaíbra Gabriel Canda was born in Maputo, Mozambique. He is one of the most influential choreographers in Africa; he reflects on the post-colonial unrest in his country with exceptional ambiguity. He studied theatre, dance and music in Mozambique and Portugal and since 1993 has created his own artistic projects. His work has been presented around the world and has won several awards. In 1998 he founded CulturArte – Cultura e Arte em Movimento, the first and only contemporary dance production space in his country. As an artistic director and choreographer, Panaíbra focuses on promoting and developing the regional and local dance scene through creations, performances and training programmes.
