We re-present the Ballet de Lorraine, which we saw in March 2021 with a programme dedicated to Merce Cunningham, when the Ballet was directed by Petter Jacobsson. French choreographer Maud Le Pladec, who presented two pieces at the Mercat two seasons ago, was appointed director in 2024. Le Pladec was responsible for the dance and choreography of the four ceremonies of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Based at the Opéra de Nancy, the Ballet de Lorraine was founded in 1969 by Jean-Albert Cartier and Hélène Traîline, and is one of the few French ballet groups created solely for contemporary dance. Now converted into the French National Choreographic Centre, it has a repertoire that includes the great representatives of 20th-century modernity, from Graham and Cunningham to the French Dominique Bagouet, Jean-Claude Gallotta and Angelin Preljocaj, always promoting avant-garde creation.
a Folia
Choreography by Marco da Silva Ferreira
With a Folia, the renowned Portuguese choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira starts from a social phenomenon of the 15th century to explore the concepts of ecstasy, euphoria and collective rebellion as motors of cultural, political and artistic construction. From this historical context, the choreographer organises a fictitious encounter between the Portuguese fiesta and contemporary dances with 22 dancers on stage.

Choreography by Maud Le Pladec
This second piece of the show, with 23 dancers, is choreographed by French choreographer Maud Le Pladec, artistic director of the Ballet de Lorraine since 2025. The creator proposes a choreography in which the dancers maintain the energy at its zenith, without defining a beginning or an end, but which will develop in a powerful continuous crescendo that will turn the work into a permanent climax.
