Maja y Bastarda is an appropriation of the less serious, sombre and pure dances. It is a clear decision to opt for dances that have been judged by others to be “less”: “As such, I celebrate the mestizo, which, flaunting its fictitious connections to the traditional and the new, produces a bastard cante jondo, a folkloric Frankenstein’s creature that is able to travel from tablao to theatre, from disco to cave, from professional to amateur or from sobriety to party”. Tafur constructs a zambra style of flamenco loaded with questions that invokes the mestizo, the majo, the outsider.
Laila Tafur is an Andalusian dancer and creative artist who studied choreography at the Reykjavík Listaháskóli, the Politécnico de Lisboa and the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona. From 2017 to 2021, she completed her master’s in contemporary thought at the Reina Sofia and MACBA, during which time she cultivated her interest in song, the amateur approach to knowledge production and the embodiment of critical thinking through humour. She has won various awards including that for best dancer in the Maspalomas and Madrid Choreographic Competitions. As a performer she has worked for creators as diverse as Janet Novás, Xavier Le Roy, Jérôme Bel, Lipi Hernandez, Albert Quesada, Carmelo Fernández and Paz Rojo. She currently combines her creative work with teaching at the Conservatorio Superior de Málaga.
