This solo undresses the Spanish copla, peeling back its layers to reveal hidden forms, as though the shawl were a veil lifted to expose what lies beneath. Drawing inspiration from the historic entertainment cafés known as cafés cantantes in Spanish, the space transforms into an enchanted terrain where the copla dancer is not presented as a fixed figure, but as an ever-changing entity. The piece pushes at the boundaries of this musical genre, where lyrics, music and performance converge, allowing its deeply rooted essence to give rise to the mysteries embedded in popular culture. The shawl becomes the guiding thread of this café.
Trained in Spanish dance and flamenco and drawn to experimentation and the search for new styles in contemporary performance, Pol Jiménez has worked as a choreographer and dancer with La Fura dels Baus, Ángel Rojas, Juan Carlos Lérida, José Manuel Álvarez, Joaquín Collado, Bruno Ramri and Mdvd, among others. He has received awards such as Best Male Performer at the 25th Butaca Awards, Best Dancer at the 2018 Critics’ Awards for the Performing Arts, and the National Ballet of Spain award at the 20th Choreographic Competition of Spanish Dance and Flamenco in Madrid in 2011. He currently works as a creator and collaborator on various pieces. Internationally, he has collaborated with Cie. Kadia Faraux and is touring his creation Lo Faunal, which was presented at Artdanthe 25 at the Théâtre de Vanves in 2023, at the Rencontres Choréographiques Internationales de Seine Saint-Denis in 2024, at C’est comme ça! in 2024, and at the Biennale de danse du Val-de-Marne in 2025. His work has also been seen in Festival de Marseille and Théâtre de la Ville de París.
