Wim Vandekeybus’s surprising debut with his company Última Vez in 1987 shook the dance world. In New York, Vandekeybus and the composers Thierry de Mey and Peter Vermeersch won the prestigious Bessie Award for their “brutal confrontation between dance and music: the dangerous, combative landscape of What the body does not remember.”
Now the show is back on a world tour with other performers, twenty-five years after it was staged to great acclaim at the Mercat de les Flors. Vandekeybus’s original choreography moves on the dangerous dividing line between attraction and repulsion. Sometimes the result is confrontation, first between two dancers, then between two groups, between the dancers and the music, and between the dancers and an intricate and fascinating play of lines. But, above all, it is an explosion of aggression, fear and danger.
Even today, after almost thirty years and a string of films and videos, Wim Vandekeybus continues to seek novelty and innovation. “For me, the form has to be different every time,” he explains. “This is why on one occasion I might create an extremely musical show (nieuwZwart), then for my next project make a film based on the experiences of one man (Monkey Sandwich), why I might then create a show for young people from whom I usually keep well away (Radical Wrong), and then switch to a classical mythology play (Oedipus/Bêt noir), or even an analytical piece in which photography plays a major part (Booty Looting).”
