VOLMIR CORDEIRO

In this new solo, the dancer and choreographer Volmir Cordeiro explores social violence and movement as a combative response, accompanied by the drummer Philippe Foch. As a punk opera, Cordeiro conceived this piece in 2020 during the pandemic, questioning the limits of freedom and control by the State. A radical performance with an extreme aesthetics, it is dedicated to the Brazilian choreographer Lia Rodrigues, with whom Cordeiro worked as a performer before moving to France.

Volmir Cordeiro has worked with the Brazilian choreographers Alejandro Ahmed, Cristina Moura and Lia Rodrigues, and in Europe, with Xavier Le Roy, Laurent Pichaud and Rémy Héritier, Emmanuelle Huynh, Jocelyn Cottencin, Vera Mantero, Nadia Lauro and Zenna Parkins, and Lâtifa Laabissi. He began his first cycle of 3 solos in 2012; in 2017, he choreographed a piece for four dancers and created a video installation on the poetics of the face in the history of dance for the contemporary art centre Passerelle as part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Centre Pompidou. His company, Donna Volcan, conceives the volcanic element – earth, fire and life force – as the basis for creation. In 2021, he received the SACD award for young choreographers.
