Mágica y Elástica is presented as a deconstructed musical that explores how sound, movement and image work together; these elements allow us to perceive what we cannot talk about, glimpse what language cannot capture, and take us to a space of mystery in the performance’s subsoil, at the precise time when experience becomes emotion. The deconstruction of the musical genre offers a field of work where narrative can emerge from an image, choreography from a piece of music, music from narrative, choreography from image, image from music, and so on, without any hierarchy between them, working together to generate the score that makes up the piece: an amorphous, intermixed, multilayer musical body.
After working as a dancer and performer with different choreographers in Europe in the 1990s, Cuqui Jerez started to develop her own choreographic work in 2001. Since then, she has created pieces that have been performed at many festivals, theatres and museums in Europe, USA and Latin America. Her pieces do not necessarily align with the idea of a “choreography”, although Cuqui Jerez believes that choreographic creation draws from components of different disciplines: Since my early pieces, my work has been a tool for understanding the performative act. In the course of my career, I have worked with performances, dance pieces, theatrical pieces, videos, texts, photographs, objects, events and publications. Viewed under different lights, I consider all these activities to be choreographies. My approach to all my works is choreographic, so basically I think of myself as a choreographer.
