Returning to the essence, to the core of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons to discover the multitude of associations and emotions it evokes, while offering a choreographic counterpoint. This well-known musical work is also an ode to nature. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Radouan Mriziga, who previously collaborated on 3ird5@W9rk (2020), share a keen interest in nature observation, geometry and embodied abstraction, as well as a concern for our changing and increasingly troubling relationship with our natural environment.
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker founded her company, Rosas, in 1983, while creating the work, Rosas danst Rosas. A year earlier, she had created Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich, her début piece in which she was already exhibiting a rigorous exploration of articulated movement, from the simplest to the most complex forms. The relationship between movement and music is another key element in the choreographer’s concept of dance. Thus, Rosas has extended the art of dance as an act of writing movements in time and space and, over the years, has explored choreography in relation to other compositional forces, such as music, geometry, visual arts and language.
The artistic work of Mriziga is noteworthy for its use of dance and choreography as a means to share knowledge with an audience, going beyond the purely aesthetic experience of a performance. What is paramount is the sharing of different forms of knowledge, be it of space, architecture, the body and its connection to mind and intellect, or, more recently, knowledge of forgotten and repressed narratives. His performances can be described as forms of ‘performed knowledge’, through which he puts forward a committed vision of art as a tool for processing and producing knowledge.
