Delirium, irrationality, hysteria and madness merge in this piece that was inspired by the Greek tragedy The Bacchae, written by Euripides in 409BC. Performed by eight dancers and five musicians, on stage they convey the exuberant images of choreographer Monteiro Freitas who has already seduced Barcelona audiences with her creations. In Bacchae – Prelude to a Purge, music, dance and mystery lead us as funambulists over the wire of intensity, in a combat of appearances and dissimulations, polarized between the fields of Apollo and Dionysius. In June 2018, Bacchae received a Silver Lion award from the Venice Biennale.
Marlene Monteiro Freitas studied at the P.A.R.T.S. dance school in Brussels and at Lisbon’s Escola Superior de Dança and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. During her career, she’s worked with, among others, choreographers Emmanuelle Huynh, Loïc Touzé, Tânia Carvalho and Boris Charmatz. The common denominators of her work are openness, impurity and intensity.
