The rehearsals for the FUTURALGIA dance production at Theater Bremen grind to a sudden halt in spring of 2020. The COVID-19 lockdown forces the artistic team into isolation. The Unusual Symptoms company dancers return home, the choreographer departs. Yet the artistic dialogue between Bremen and Barcelona continues via the aid of digital tools. Private flats turn into rehearsal stages and gyms. In between communal zoom sessions and the taking up of workout apps, YouTube dances and yoga tutorials, a dance piece emerges in the virtual realm – which eventually returns to the stage.

In their film, Bremen-based video artist Cantufan Klose and Catalan choreographer Núria Guiu Sagarra immerse themselves in these exceptional circumstances again. In a mixture of documentation and fiction, they pick up on the dancers’ experiences and trace them in their attempts to create a feeling of communion across the distance, making the body come more alive in the mirror of its virtual reflection.
