Body and movement 0-3

During the first years of life, the body moves instinctively, free of prejudices, while about to be burdened with (im)positions. In the construction of the affective bond between the child and the adult, the interactions between them are fundamental. This is why our goals are to promote family experiences and work with kindergartens on long-term projects. Observing groups of children, the way they play, to find out what we can offer through the language of the body and the movement.

The Body and Movement 0-3 project supports a concept of dance linked to the free, natural and spontaneous movement of young children.

Based on the premise that movement is an essential factor for development in the first stage of life, we can envision the entire development of the physical and motor skills of young children as a dance sequence, a phrase of movement that begins lying face-up in the lowest level of space and finishes with bipedalism. This process incorporates many of the basic components of the language of dance (such as various types of displacement, levels in space, directions, paths, different trajectories, and so on).

In 2013, with the involvement of teachers, children and their families, the Graner Arts Factory and the Mercat de les Flors, supported by the IMEB (Municipal Institute of Education of Barcelona), launched the Body and Movement 0-3 project in order to introduce dance and movement into kindergartens. They are currently working with over fifteen kindergartens in Barcelona.

The lines of work of the project are as follows:

– Teacher training (to offer resources, tools and materials through experiential training so that the schools’ own educational teams can promote and favour the language of movement and dance among children aged 0-3)

– On-site assessment at schools

– Artistic experiences in the classroom
