Pugilatus is a theatrical experience open and closed on four sides, where the audience and actors share the same space. In this square the two actors swing back and forth between education, religion, food, life, death – the central points between life or death in this theatrical journey. The public is welcomed into a ritual. The result of the combination of Jordi Aspa – Escartala Circus – and Piero Steiner – Los Los – is a comicdramaticalpoeticalcorporal journey where the story is born out of its own entrails. They are not a trainer and boxer, nor a mother and son, not even Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. They are charlatans of the absurd and visionaries of world order. They talk to us about the origins of everybody, what has fed them, about their fears and triumphs, about their beliefs. Pugilatus is a dance of emotions and stories that seek out the origin of their own fate. It is a boxing match between strength and common sense. It is a newfound humanity amid the drama of a tin of tomatoes rendering service to a plate of “wild” macaroni. It is a morbid state in the life of the thoughts of a plate of iberic ham. It is a burial for all that we would like to bury.

In 1987, Jordi Aspa and Bet Miralta created Escarlata Circus, and have since put on a large number of shows that have toured Europe, Israel and Russia. They were artistic directors of Trapezi, the Circus Festival in Reus, from its launch in 1997 until 2011 and won the Catalan National Circus Prize in 2007. They’ve also directed shows by other companies and events.
