THE SHOW

Proximity, by Garry Stewart, reflects the ubiquity of the use of the camera within contemporary culture. It is a work that destabilizes the framework that we routinely use to share the perception of other people, stimulating the imagination and increasing the possibilities of visualisation.

Through the choreography the dancers use the cameras to portray their bodies and their movements; the images are instantly manipulated and projected on a screen and create a bridge between the dancers and the audience, playing with the pleasure of disrupting and expanding the visual field. Thus, they invite the spectator to trace out the visual poetics that transform the singular into the multiple, the macro into the micro, and in this way enjoy the possibility of seeing beyond the obvious.

THE COMPANY

ADT is the oldest professional Australian contemporary dance company. They have been touring the globe with their shows since 1965. Garry Stewart, their artistic director, who has led the company for the last 12 years, trains the dancers in many disciplines, from contemporary dance to classical ballet, as well as elements of martial arts, breakdance, gymnastics and yoga. The result is a fusion of forms, which constitutes a unique choreographic palette. Garry Stewart’s work incorporates elements such as photography, robotics and architecture, often present in his shows.

The ADT previously performed the work G at the Mercat to great acclaim.
