The creative side of Catalan dance offers a great wealth and diversity of companies and creators who enjoy national and international prestige. At the same time, the region can lay claim to a good network of municipal theatres and quality stage facilities.

In order to visualize, share and introduce the work of local creators to a wider audience, the Catalan Government Plan for the Promotion of Dance, with the cooperation of municipal stage facilities around the region and the Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona, provides for the production one large-format piece for the stage. This will be presented next season at the Mercat de les Flors and programmed on continuation at municipal theatres.

This year’s production will consist of a double bill at the hands of choreographers Roser López Espinosa and Thomas Noone.

Trained in Amsterdam, Roser López Espinosa has worked with Catalan choreographers such as Àngels Margarit, Cesc Gelabert, Iago Pericot and Pere Faura. Since 2006 she has also developed her own work, which has been recognised with several awards and is regularly presented on international stages. The piece she will present here, L’Estol, takes the fascinating journey of migrating birds and the desire to fly as its starting point.

Thomas Noone has worked with his own company in Barcelona since 2001. He also works as a guest choreographer for international companies. Since 2006 he has been artistic director of the Dansat festival. In 2011 he won the City of Barcelona Award. Noone proposes Many, an abstract piece that uses music and movement as the guiding thread to address the issue of the individual versus the group. Many is a performance originally created and produced by the Opéra National du Rhin.
