Seduced by the radical and deceptively simple minimalism of Lucinda Childs’ first pieces, Nicole Beutler presents a new version of two of them: Radial Courses (1976), a fascinating and indecipherably complex choreographic arrangement, and Interior Drama (1977), where five dancers form a seemingly perfect system that moves to the rhythm of repetitive, illusory patterns.
Childs is known worldwide as a representative of the group of postmodern North American choreographers who broke away from the prevailing notions of modern dance in the 1960s. She describes her work as an “intense experience of intense looking and listening”. Beutler is one of the rebel choreographers from the beginning of the new millennium committed to opening up new frontiers. She uses musicality and subtle humour to provoke the pubic.
Nicole Beutler was born in Munich in 1969. Since finishing her training at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam she has taken on a steadily more important role as a choreographer and specialist in the world of dance and theatre. The composer Gary Shepherd and lighting designer Minna Tiikkainen are her closest collaborators. Her work has appeared regularly at festivals and theatres around the world, including Sadler’s Wells in London, the Otoño en Primavera Festival in Madrid and the Side Step Festival in Helsinki.
